To be eligible for a school-based traineeship, your trainee must:

  1. Be a full-time student, enrolled in senior secondary school studies
  2. Have their school’s agreement to undertake school-based training
  3. Have an employer willing to train them in their workplace
  4. Have a parent/guardian’s permission (if under the age of 18)

How School-based Apprenticeships Work:

  • An SBAT is a School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship that allows high school students to gain an industry recognised national qualification while completing paid work and structured training.
  • NSW school-based apprenticeships are up to the trainee’s school and employer to approve the release day(s) for employment and training
  • The trainee student will receive training from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that will be completed at either school, work or by attending a registered training facility
  • They must complete a National Training Contract, a legal agreement between the trainee, their employer and their school – contact Apprenticeship Support Australia for assistance with this

REINSW cannot make any assessment on eligibility of a learner for a SBAT under the Smart and Skilled program.
