As part of the broader SBAT NSW program, REINSW offers the real estate school-based traineeship CPP31519 - Certificate III in Real Estate Practice, a nationally recognised qualification. Government funding and benefits may be available through the NSW Government under Smart and Skilled Funding for eligible applicants. As part of the Certificate 3 Real Estate SBAT Traineeship, REINSW offers the five (5) units required to register with Fair Trading NSW a Certificate of Registration. Both learners and employers can benefit from a traineeship program.

SBAT benefits for employers

*As part of the Smart and Skilled fee-free school-based apprenticeships, employers may be eligible for incentives. Incentives are not guaranteed with a school based apprenticeship or traineeship, however. REINSW is not liable for any SBAT incentives that may be payable to the employer. Where there is an issue with school-based apprentice incentives, employers are to contact the Australian Apprentice Centre that completed the initial sign-up of the traineeship.

To be eligible for a school-based traineeship, your trainee must:

  1. Be a full-time student, enrolled in senior secondary school studies
  2. Have their school’s agreement to undertake school-based training
  3. Have an employer willing to train them in their workplace
  4. Have a parent/guardian’s permission (if under the age of 18) 

How School-based Apprenticeships Work: 

  • An SBAT is a School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship that allows high school students to gain an industry recognised national qualification while completing paid work and structured training.
  • NSW school-based apprenticeships are up to the trainee’s school and employer to approve the release day(s) for employment and training 
  • The trainee student will receive training from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that will be completed at either school, work or by attending a registered training facility 
  • They must complete a National Training Contract, a legal agreement between the trainee, their employer and their school – contact Apprenticeship Support Australia for assistance with this 

REINSW cannot make any assessment on eligibility of a learner for a SBAT under the Smart and Skilled program.

Through an SBAT you can start a rewarding real estate career while completing school Spend Years 10, 11 and 12 earning while you’re learning about a career that interests you. Eligible school based apprentices and trainee will gain credit towards their HSC, get a nationally recognised qualification, gain valuable work skills and be work-ready when school finishes.

Student rights and obligations 

Students receiving government-subsidised training under Smart and Skilled have certain rights and obligations. Your rights and obligations as a school based trainee are stated below:

You have the right to: 

  • expect that the quality of your training meets the standards, regulations and requirement set down by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and Smart and Skilled 
  • be informed about the collection of your personal information and be able to review and correct that information 
  • access your training provider's consumer protection complaints process 

Your obligations include: 

  • providing accurate information to the registered training organisation  
  • behaving in a responsible and ethical manner 

Resolving issues or concerns within traineeships & school based apprenticeships  

As the first step, you're encouraged to speak to your training provider about any issues or concerns about your training under Smart and Skilled. All approved Smart and Skilled training providers must have a consumer protection officer who can help students with their concerns.

You can also contact the Smart and Skilled customer support centre to seek assistance, ask for advice, make a complaint or provide feedback. You can do this over the phone on 13 28 11, or in person at a Training Services NSW centre.

Fee-free traineeships are subsidised by both the NSW and Federal Governments, making them accessible to eligible individuals. A school-based traineeship (SBAT) in Certificate III in Real Estate Practice gives students a practical pathway into the property industry while they complete their Higher School Certificate (HSC).

SBAT Traineeship FAQs

Q: What support will I receive during the real estate SBAT?

Throughout the traineeship, you will receive ongoing support from your training provider and employer. You'll have access to a mentor or supervisor in the workplace, as well as regular check-ins with your trainer to ensure you're progressing through the program.

Q: How long does the real estate SBAT take to complete?

The real estate SBAT typically takes 12 to 24 months to complete, depending on the pace of learning and work placement. It’s designed to be flexible, allowing students to balance their school commitments with their real-world training.

Q: Can I choose where I work during the traineeship?

While REINSW will assist you in finding a suitable real estate agency, the placement will depend on the availability of employers and your preferences. However, REINSW ensures that all placements are aligned with industry standards, giving you the best opportunity for learning.

Q: Do I need to find my own employer for the traineeship?

REINSW helps connect students with employers, but in some cases, students may need to assist in finding a placement that meets the course and training requirements. We can guide you through the process and provide resources to help.

Q: Can I continue working in real estate after completing my SBAT?

Q: What if I can’t attend school full-time? Am I still eligible for the SBAT?
