Choose your career path

4 September 2023

Gone are the days of holding a Certificate of Registration for your entire career. With the start of landmark training reforms in March 2020, Certificate of Registration holders were put on notice to upgrade to a Real Estate Licence within four years – and REINSW has a range of training options to help you do just that.

“One of the central elements in the reform package that commenced in March 2020, was the requirement for all agents in the industry to upgrade their qualification from a Certificate of Registration to a Real Estate Licence,” REINSW Training Manager Aaron Barber said.

“For agents who gained their Certificate of Registration before the reforms commenced, the coming months are particularly significant. To continue to work in the industry, these agents must secure their Real Estate Licence before 22 March 2024, which is less than 12 months away. Agents who don’t will be locked out of the industry for 12 months.”

Aaron explained that agents can no longer remain a Certificate holder for their entire career.

“While agents who obtained their Certificate of Registration after the commencement of the reforms still have time to upgrade, time is running out for those agents who are Certificate holders and have been in the industry for years,” he said.

As the peak industry body for real estate in New South Wales, we are focused on ensuring that we provide a full range of learning options to suit the career goals of members.

Career options

“Securing your Real Estate Licence requires completion of the Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice, which comprises a range of compulsory and elective units of competency,” Aaron explained. “And, when it comes to the elective units, you have the option to choose units that suit your desired career path.”

With this in mind, REINSW has tailored a range of learning options to set agents on their chosen career path.

“Of course, there is the general course that caters to those wanting to progress as a sales agent or property manager,” Aaron said. “But we also have options available to those agents wanting to specialise as auctioneers, buyers’ agents, and stock and station agents.

“And, very soon, we’ll have an option for those agents wanting to specialise in the commercial market.”

Aaron emphasised that REINSW’s goal is always to provide the learning options agents want and need to achieve their career goals.

“As the peak industry body for real estate in New South Wales, we are focused on ensuring that we provide a full range of learning options to suit the career goals of members,” he said.

“Upgrading to a Real Estate Licence is no longer optional, so I encourage all members to jump onto our website and choose a learning option that suits your desired career path.

“And, don’t forget, REINSW is here to support you at every step of your learning journey.”
