The NSW School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship program offers real estate employers support to take on and train a senior high school student. It’s more than just a high-school job. It sets a young person up for a career in our industry while completing their HSC and it benefits your business.
No doubt you’ve heard about traineeships. But what about school-based traineeships?
“Real estate agencies can invest in the future of the real estate industry by taking on a school-based trainee,” Aaron Barber, REINSW Training Manager, said. “The program is designed to help students who are keen to join the workforce, but who still want to complete their senior schooling.
“The traineeship means the student can gain an industry-recognised qualification, credit toward their HSC and work placement that allows them to learn a vocation.
“While undertaking the HSC, your trainee will undertake a combination of industry-specialised training and one day per week in your paid employment.”
During their traineeship, school-based trainees will acquire the skills to work in the real estate industry. They’ll receive foundation training in the following areas:
- Legislation
- Selling and leasing practices
- Meeting customer needs and expectations
- Using and maintaining property and client information databases
- Workplace health and safety.
“A school-based traineeship is a great way to help a young person kick-start their career in the real estate industry and also provide your agency with an additional resource,” Aaron said. “For you, training costs are minimised, and financial incentives make school-based traineeships an attractive employment option.

“Depending on when the student commences as a trainee – in Year, 10, 11 or 12 – and the number of hours they work over that time, they will complete the five units of competency they need to apply for a Certificate of Registration, or even all units towards their Certificate III in Real Estate Practice.”
Aaron said that one of the key benefits of school-based traineeships is “getting young people out in the field”, so they can experience the real estate industry from end to end.
“It allows them to see what it’s like to work in the industry and how an agency operates, while you help them through their training,” he said.
“At the end of the traineeship, you’ll have a tailor-made employee who is trained and available to work full-time once they’ve finished high school.
“What a great way to invest in the future of the real estate industry and also support the growth of your agency.”
The Certificate III in Real Estate Practice includes 14 units of competency, including five units imported from the Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice required to obtain a Certificate of Registration.
