Continuing Education Units (CPD) - FAQs

The most frequently asked question about CPD for the real estate industry.

What is CPD?

Continuing professional development (CPD) is the ongoing process that Real Estate and Property professionals undertake to ensure they maintain relevant skills and competencies throughout their professional careers.

We offer a variety of classroom CPD courses and online learning, including The Roadshow. Inhouse Group training is also available for groups of 5 or more.

REINSW is an Approved CPD provider as required by NSW Fair Trading.

Do I need to do Professional Development training every year?

In NSW it is a mandatory requirement that all agents (holding either a Certificate of Registration or a licence) complete Continuing Professional Development (CPD) every year.

All individuals who hold a class 1 licence, class 2 licence or a certificate of registration must complete the CPD specified for their licence or certificate category each year.

Failure to comply with your CPD requirements may result in the suspension or cancellation of your licence or certificate.

The CPD year for all licence and certificate holders starts on 23 March each year and ends on 22 March the following year.

Depending on what class a licence you hold, will reflect what type of CPD Training you are required to undertake:

Please refer to the CPD Requirements for each licence. Only approved training providers such as REINSW can deliver the compulsory CPD topics training. Still unsure of what you have to do. You can learn more on the NSW Fair Trading website or contact us.

When do I need to complete my CPD?

Each year all Assistant Agents, Class 2 Agents, and Class 1 (Licensee in Charge) Agents need to complete their CPD, or Continuing Professional Development. The CPD period is between March 23rd to March 22 the following year. Please bear in mind you will need to renew your licence in accordance with the dates on the public register to ensure your licence is current.

What happens if I forget to complete CPD training?

Failure to comply with your CPD requirements may result in the suspension or cancellation of your licence or certificate. The responsibility also falls on the licensee-in-charge who needs to ensure the entire team is up to date.

How long do I need to keep a record of CPD training?

Licence and certificate holders must retain their own records of any compulsory, elective or business skills topics completed.

Certificate of registration holders must retain the statement of attainment issued by a registered training organisation for each unit completed from the relevant Certificate IV for their area of practice.

Licence holders (class 1, and class 2) must retain all records for 3 years.

Certificate of registration holders must retain all records for 4 years.

Licence and certificate holders are also required to provide evidence to Fair Trading that they have completed the required CPD topics.

Do you offer corporate CPD training for agencies?

Yes. For small or large groups, REINSW trainers will visit your office, or a location of your choice, and deliver a training program specifically tailored to meet the needs of your team and your agency.

In-house training is an ideal solution that delivers the best results in the most efficient manner. A training solution can be designed for your office in different combinations: for example, all in one day, or as a series of short sessions spread over several days.
