  1. Be 15 years old or over
  2. No longer at school
  3. Living or working within NSW
  4. An Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen

There is no experience required to undertake a real estate traineeship. This training program is designed for individuals who are new to the real estate industry and are looking to take their first step towards a successful career.

Student rights and obligations 

Students receiving government-subsidised training under Smart and Skilled have certain rights and obligations. Your rights and obligations as a school based trainee are stated below:

You have the right to: 

  • expect that the quality of your training meets the standards, regulations and requirement set down by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and Smart and Skilled 
  • be informed about the collection of your personal information and be able to review and correct that information 
  • access your training provider's consumer protection complaints process 

Your obligations include: 

  • providing accurate information to the registered training organisation  
  • behaving in a responsible and ethical manner 

Resolving issues or concerns within traineeships & school based apprenticeships  

As the first step, you're encouraged to speak to your training provider about any issues or concerns about your training under Smart and Skilled. All approved Smart and Skilled training providers must have a consumer protection officer who can help students with their concerns.

You can also contact the Smart and Skilled customer support centre to seek assistance, ask for advice, make a complaint or provide feedback. You can do this over the phone on 13 28 11, or in person at a Training Services NSW centre.

Fee-free traineeships are subsidised by both the NSW and Federal Governments, making them accessible to eligible individuals. Q: How long does the Real Estate Traineeship take to complete?

A: The duration of the traineeship depends on the level of qualification and the individual’s study pace. Typically, a Certificate III in Real Estate Practice takes around 12-18 months, while a Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice may take up to 2 years.

Q: What qualifications can I earn from a Real Estate Traineeship?

A: Upon completion, trainees will receive a nationally recognised Certificate III in Real Estate Practice (CPP31519) or a Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice (CPP41419), depending on the level of the traineeship.

Q: How can I apply for a Real Estate Traineeship?

A: To apply for a Real Estate Traineeship, simply register your interest on the REINSW website. You will need to meet the eligibility criteria for government funding under the Smart and Skilled program.

Q: Am I eligible for a fee-free Real Estate Traineeship?

A: To qualify for a fee-free traineeship under the Smart and Skilled program, you must meet certain criteria including being at least 15 years old, not currently enrolled in school, and living or working within NSW. Q: Can I complete the Real Estate Traineeship online?

A: REINSW offers online and blended learning options for some traineeships. However, there may be practical requirements, such as work experience, that need to be completed in-person. Check with REINSW for specific course delivery options.

Q: What support will I receive during my traineeship?

A: REINSW provides ongoing support throughout your traineeship, including access to trainers, mentors, and additional resources to ensure you succeed in both your training and work placement.

Q: Can I continue my real estate education after completing a traineeship?

A: Yes, after completing the Certificate III or IV, you may choose to further your education with higher-level qualifications, such as a Diploma of Property Services (Agency Management), to expand your career opportunities in the real estate industry.

Q: Are employers eligible for any incentives?

A: Yes, as part of the Smart and Skilled fee-free traineeship program, employers may be eligible for government incentives to support their participation in the traineeship program. Please note that some government incentives will no longer be available after 01 July 2024.
