After a two-year absence and lobbying by the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales, tenancy cases will again be heard in Parramatta.
Attorney General Greg Smith SC announced on Friday (11 April) that Parramatta will host regular sittings of the state’s new super tribunal, NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT), from 30 June 2014.
REINSW President Malcolm Gunning said the decision to have NCAT sit in Parramatta three days a week was a much needed service for tenants and landlords in Sydney’s west.
“We were very concerned when the old Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal (CTTT) stopped operating in Parramatta in early 2012.
“Resolving disputes in Parramatta is a win for everyone in the property industry, especially landlords and tenants who will no longer face the costs and time restraints of having to travel to the Sydney or Penrith Register to have their case heard.
“Our efforts over the last two years to highlight the importance of tribunal hearings in Parramatta have been vindicated by this decision,” Mr Gunning said.
Incorporating the former CTTT, NCAT is a one stop shop for specialist tribunal services in NSW, dealing with tenancy disputes, as well as consumer complaints, professional disciplinary hearings and applications for guardianship.
NCAT began operating on 2 January 2014 and has conducted more than 28,000 hearings in its first 100 days. Up to 40 matters are expected to be listed on each hearing day in Parramatta.
