Angus Robertson wins the 2023 REINSW Novice Auctioneers Competition

30 June 2023

Five finalists battled it out yesterday at this year’s REINSW Novice Auctioneers Competition (NAC) Final. The event saw 25-year-old Angus Robertson from Sydney Auction House, William Inglis and Sons, take out the winner’s crown.

Born and raised on his family cattle property near Scone in the Hunter Valley of NSW, Angus studied a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Sydney and completed the Godolphin Flying Start – a two-year leadership and management graduate program specialising in the thoroughbred industry. He commenced his role at William Inglis and Sons in August 2022 where he currently works as an auctioneer and bloodstock sales consultant.

Having only heard about the Novice Auctioneers Competition for the first time a few months ago, Angus decided to throw his hat in the ring and apply.

“I reached out to at least half a dozen people who were willing to take me around to auctions with them and give me feedback on the heat or practice the script with me for the Final. I’ve found that it’s an industry where everyone’s really willing to show you help along the way.”

“It’s been exciting to meet a whole new sphere of people and it’s just been a really great experience altogether.”

The NAC is a platform for the state’s would-be and up-and-coming auctioneers to try their hand at auctioneering. Each participant auctions a luxury item of their choice in the heats, with funds raised both during the heats and the final going directly to REINSW’s 2023 charity partner - Fighting Chance

This year for the fourth year in a row, the pressure was stepped up with the finalists given an actual property to auction off – this year it was a 4-bedroom rural property in Cootamundra which sold for $555,000.

REINSW Auctioneer Chapter Committee member and competition compere Ricky Briggs was impressed by the quality of auctioneers in yesterday’s Final.

“Despite only two heats taking place this year, the calibre of the competitors was far superior to what we have seen in other years. That’s not to say that the others in previous years were not good, it just means that competitors are now putting in a greater level of training. The top 3 finalists had only 5 points in differentiation which goes to show the quality of auctioneers that are actually coming through into the industry now.

REINSW President Peter Matthews was excited by the high standard of this year’s competitors and the opportunities now afforded to them by taking part in the NAC competition.

“We’re seeing competitors get out of their comfort zone to move into a field that not a lot of people get the opportunity to do. They put themselves out there and all of them did an amazing job throughout this competition. I think the future of auctioneering is in their very, very safe hands.”
