With just under two weeks until the 2019 Novice Auctioneers Competition state final, excitement is building rapidly in anticipation of witnessing the next wave of auctioneers battle it out to be crowned 2019 champion.
With six strong competitors, the competition will be fierce, fast and fun.
Sydney East heat finalist, Marshall Mullen, is a former real estate agent on Sydney’s Lower North Shore. He has represented several prominent franchised offices, but says this competition proves how much growth opportunity this industry offers.
“I’ve been watching past winners at state and national level, and I’ve been blown away by the quality,” he says. “How the best of the best have mastered the art form is incredible – especially when there is so much to learn!
“I’m truly excited for this opportunity. Win, lose or draw on the day, I am very much looking forward to competing in the final and pursuing a career in auctioneering.”
Kickstarting auctioneer careers
The NAC has launched some of NSW’s most successful auctioneers’ careers. Damien Cooley won the competition in 2000 and in 2003 launched Cooley Auctions, one of Sydney’s premier auction houses. Jesse Davidson, Clarence White and Edward Riley are also NAC alumni.
Zak Morcillo, a voice artist, freelance producer and winner of the Sydney CBD heat, says the NAC is a great way to kickstart a career as an auctioneer – and the proof is in the profiles.
“This competition is a brilliant platform for aspiring auctioneers,” he says. “I'm incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to showcase what I've learnt so far in front of industry professionals – many of whom are past winners – as well as total strangers!
“With the experience I gain from the NAC, I'm looking forward to calling many more auctions in the future.”
Closest you’ll get to the real thing
Winner of the Wollongong, Bryce Bevan, entered the NAC to get exposure to property auctioneering. And with seven fellow competitors and over 60 spectators at his heat, his skills were definitely put to the test.
“I work outside of the real estate industry,” he says. “So the competition was an opportunity to get exposure to property auctioneering and have my selling technique critiqued by skilled auctioneers who do this on a daily basis.
“It's also a great opportunity to network with industry professionals for anyone interested in getting into real estate or simply learning more about the art of auctioneering.”
The competition has so far raised over $6,500 for Domestic Violence NSW, REINSW’s 2019–20 charity partner.
