Do I need a plan for home opens?

By Tim McKibbin, REINSW CEO

There are certain things you can do before and during a home open to ensure you’re prepared.

Firstly, consider listing your needs, wants and deal breakers before you begin the search. This way, you’ll have the clarity you need to asses what works with your lifestyle and what is most important to you or your family.

Before you head out it’s also worth researching the home and its history. Try and get as much information as you can on the property itself, so you don’t get your hopes up on something that is less than ideal.

When you’re there, consider taking notes. Not only on the home’s features, but also other insights, such as, how close it is to public transport and how long it will take you to get to work. If you’re looking at multiple properties, being able to refer to these notes will be invaluable in helping you pinpoint the best home for you.

Lastly, if you’ve found a property you like the look of, go back for a second inspection, just make sure it’s on a different day at a different time. What may be a sleepy street on a Saturday could become a main thoroughfare during the week. It’s better to pick that up now, than have the unfortunate realisation after you’ve moved in.
