The desire to establish a political party to ensure that the profession has a strong voice in parliament is one of the major outcomes of the 2014 REINSW Industry Summit, held last week.
REINSW President Malcolm Gunning said the event was a tremendous success, with attendees engaging in deep thought and discussion about the future of the industry.
“There was a major focus on the need to lift standards in the profession,” Mr Gunning said.
“An overwhelming majority of participants felt that the only way to ensure that this happens is through partial self-regulation of the industry.
“This proposal, with an emphasis on education and on-going training, was put forward to NSW Fair Trading Minister Matthew Mason-Cox in November.
“It was also clear that if government is not prepared to work with us our members would like to form a political party to pursue our goals.
“Real estate’s place and importance for NSW should not be played down or underestimated. Our profession is critical to the economy and it is time for this to be recognised.
“We must ensure standards are lifted and if this cannot be done through our elected representatives we will create our own political force,” Mr Gunning said.
The REINSW Industry Summit took place on Thursday, 27 November 2014 at the Rydges World Square, 389 Pitt Street, Sydney.
