Winning the wellbeing challenge

A balance of ambition, drive and making time for wellness is at the heart of Robyn Gleeson’s success. Here’s how she keeps her energy high and encourages a culture of winning and wellbeing within her team.

Robyn Gleeson is resolved to not only survive the personal and professional challenges that are thrown her way daily, but to thrive.

“Some days it can feel like it’s just one thing after another,” she laughed. “But my role is to deal with it and to fix it. You need to have plenty of resilience in life. It’s important for everyone to understand that it’s not always easy – you need to continually work at it.”

After just a few moments speaking to Robyn it becomes clear that, as well as resilience, she also has an innate zest for life that’s clearly been a driving force throughout her career.

“I’m continually striving to improve myself,” she explained. “I’ve always had that drive and it comes from within. I have a natural instinct to keep moving forward and reach the next level. It’s an ambitious drive I’ve always had, and always will have, across all areas of my life.”

Unexpected beginnings

Robyn’s entry into the real estate industry came about unexpectedly.

After spending a year caring full-time for her terminally ill mother-in-law, Robyn knew she didn’t want to return to her former career. She was considering her options when a friend offered her the opportunity to take on a temporary role as a property manager.

“That was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” Robyn said of being a full-time carer. “It really had an impact on how I approach things, my resilience and my heart. It changes you.

“Following that experience, I knew I didn’t want to return to the banking sector because I found it to be too restrictive. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do next, but I knew I wanted to build a career.

“When I agreed to give property management a go, I had no idea what I was in for. But I took to it really well and found I enjoyed it.

“There were a lot of aspects of the job that I found to be instinctive, particularly the need to work efficiently and juggle multiple tasks at once. Of course, I needed training around certain things like compliance, but the role was interesting to me. Almost immediately, I felt like I had found my place – and my career just grew from there.”

Within five years of her first taste of the industry, Robyn had bought into Elders Real Estate Port Macquarie, and was managing and overseeing a team. While she continued to work as a property manager for two of the 15 years she owned her own business, her leadership role continued to expand as the business grew.

“There have been plenty of highs and lows, and lots of challenges that come with running a business,” she said of her experience as a business owner. “I’ve always kept moving forward and striving for those winning days because, when it comes down to it, the highs you experience on those days are worth all the lows and the hard work.”

Today, Robyn has sold her share of the business, but has stayed on in the role of General Manager and Licensee-in-charge at Elders Real Estate Port Macquarie, which is now part of the Elders Lifestyle Group that includes offices in Crescent Head, Lake Cathie, Laurieton, Wauchope and Kew.

Benefits of balance

Like most successful business leaders, Robyn knows discipline and hard work deliver results. But she doesn’t believe this has to be at the expense of leading a full life outside of the office.

For Robyn, life outside work involves an active role as a wife, mother and grandmother of two. And making time for personal health and wellbeing is something Robyn won’t compromise on.

“I had a real awakening when I first started in business,” Robyn explained. “You think you’re doing the right thing by working hard and pushing yourself, because you need to run a successful business and make sure everyone keeps their jobs and gets paid.

“But I realised very quickly that I also have a responsibility to take care of my own health and wellbeing. As a business leader, people are depending on you.

“And it’s not just your team. It’s your family and your team’s families. I realised that if I didn’t look after myself, I was going to let them all down by getting sick or burnt out. Running a business is so much bigger than just you and there’s too much at stake to let anything slip.”

Robyn is dedicated to her own, and her family’s, health and wellbeing and encourages everyone she works with to invest in their own wellness – whether that’s regular exercise, yoga or just making time to reset on the weekend.

“We all have people who are depending on us to be well and functioning at our best,” she explained. “My personal motto is: A strong body is a strong mind. I’ve always believed this and live by it.”

“Having balance in my life is one of the things that helps me to stay motivated at work. There are certain things that are simply non-negotiable for me, like regular exercise.

“Most weekdays I’m up at 5am and off to the gym. For me, exercise helps me start the day well, so I maintain high energy and feel positive. I take this energy to the office with me and the day continues with that high vibe.”

Robyns top tips for success

  • Take yourself and your career seriously. If you don’t, how will your clients take you seriously? Real estate offers a great opportunity for a career, but you need to make it a priority.
  • Be prepared for setbacks. There will be challenging days, but the next day will be better. You need to be willing to get back up, dust yourself off and carry on.
  • Keep healthy and fit. Take your health and wellbeing seriously, and have regular medical check-ups so you can stay on top of any issues.
  • Some days you need to wear a Teflon coat. This will protect you from negative energy at work. But you need to remember to take that Teflon coat off when you get home, so you are open to give and receive love.

Yoga and spending time in nature are also important to Robyn.

“I do feel aligned with the philosophy of yoga,” she said. “It’s helped my resilience and taught me how to go with the flow. I’ve learnt to accept things as they are, make a situation work as it is and not push back on it.

“I also find it really good to spend a little bit of ‘me time’ in nature every weekend to reset. Whether that’s bushwalking or going to the beach, spending time in nature helps me.

“By looking after myself, I can bring that high energy into the team environment to encourage a productive week.”

Spreading the wellness vibe

Robyn’s personal philosophy about the importance of prioritising wellness is shared across the Elders Lifestyle Group.

As well as initiatives in the office, our leadership team recently took part in a corporate yoga and wellness seminar.

“It’s important that everyone in the business understands the importance of wellness and how it impacts your career,” Robyn said. “This needs to start at the leadership level and filter down throughout the business.

“There are a number of things we do as a business. It’s all about having options for the team, so it’s easy for them to embrace wellness by choosing something that works for them.

“We have fresh fruit, not sweet biscuits, always available in the kitchen for the team. We also have a personal training group for people who want to participate, and offer a few perks like massages as a reward system for joining in. As an office, we promote and support anyone who wants to take part.

“We care about the health of our team and these initiatives are about helping them to make good choices. It’s also important to show people that having energy and being healthy is something you actively need to work at. Knowing you can take control of your health is empowering.”

Each team member is also entitled to take the day off work on their birthday, an initiative which Robyn said has been happily embraced by the whole office.

Community minded

As well as a healthy mind and body, the team at the Elders Lifestyle Group is passionate about supporting their local community.

“Everyone in the office has one day they can take off work every year, so they can volunteer for a charity or a cause of their choice,” Robyn said.

“We do have a very community-minded culture in all our offices, so this opportunity is something everyone enjoys doing and as a business it’s important to us that we can support it.”

Throughout the year, the offices in the Elders Lifestyle Group support a number of charities including Daffodil Day, Jeans for Genes day, The Biggest Morning Tea and the Youth Off The Streets Real Estate Sleep Out.

Future focused

Although she’s enjoyed many great highlights as a business leader, Robyn still has plenty of career goals in her sights.

“At 61, I feel as energetic and vital as I have ever been,” she said.

“For me, the timing on the next step is about knowing what is right for me and then acting on it. At the moment, I’m involved in personal development coaching to enhance my skills, and I’m focusing on mentoring others in the industry and passing on a legacy.”

Why I love real estate

Robyn said that the most rewarding part of her career is the longstanding relationships she’s built with people.

“I pride myself on the relationships I’ve sustained over the years,” she said. “And I have quality people around me, both colleagues and clients, who have backed me in the not-so-good times and have celebrated with me in the great times.

“There are so many rewarding moments in this industry and I really enjoy those winning days, the feeling of productivity and progress of the business.”

Robyn uses her management position to spread high energy vibes across her team.

“I’ve seen how this can become part of the culture in the team,” she said.

“I also love the mentoring opportunities that come with my role. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience with my team. Some people in the team have been working with me for 15 years and I’m really proud to see they are still here, still enjoying their work and having fun.”

Professional and personal authenticity

Robyn strongly believes that leaders need to be consistent.

“You must always lead by example,” she said. “An effective leader holds themselves to account and tries to be a role model in everything they do.

“Your personal life and personal values are important, so making sure they are consistent with your professional values is essential. How you conduct yourself in all areas of your life needs to shine through when you are a leader.

“Your leadership style needs to reflect who you genuinely are as a person and how you live your life. If you behave one way in the office and are different outside of work then people will see you as fake. When you are a leader, it’s important how other people see you, if they don’t believe in you then you won’t be an effective leader.

“As a leader, you also need to stay open to feedback and be willing to work on self-improvement. There is always something you can do to be better than you were yesterday.”
