NSW must increase fire safety

21 February 2018

Damning new research obtained by Smoke Alarm Solutions, discovered only 75 per cent (1) of New South Wales homes have working smoke alarms, compared to 85 per cent (2) of households in Queensland.

The legislation also differs between the two states, so should New South Wales follow Queensland and change its smoke alarm legislation?

All rental properties in Queensland must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in all bedrooms by 2022, with owner occupiers given until 2027 to comply.

In contrast, New South Wales requires all residents to have at least one working smoke alarm installed on each level of a premises (including owner-occupied homes, rental properties, relocatable homes, caravans, moveable dwellings or any other residential building where people sleep).

Interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms are particularly responsive to smouldering fires and dense smoke. They also communicate with each other, meaning your bedroom alarm will sound if the smoke alarm in the kitchen is triggered.

NSW residents playing Russian roulette with safety

Fire & Rescue New South Wales investigations also discovered 56 per cent of home fire deaths in New South Wales did not have a working smoke alarm.

Cameron Davis, Smoke Alarm Solutions CEO, said: “The research proves New South Wales residents are blasé about fire safety and playing Russian roulette with the safety and lives of family and friends.

“At an absolute minimum, working smoke alarms should be in every New South Wales home, ideally interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms located in hallways, living areas and bedrooms.

“Nobody thinks it’ll happen to them, but Fire & Rescue New South Wales will attend almost 300 house fires this month that will claim the lives of at least two people.

“Families and landlords have a responsibility to ensure their properties are safe and there is no better investment than an up-to-date and working smoke alarm.”
