Rental repairs and your rights

By Tim McKibbin, REINSW CEO

Property repairs are a common issue and one of the most common complaints raised with tenant advocacy services. Many complaints can be avoided with an understanding of your rights and responsibilities as a tenant or landlord.

While tenants are responsible for keeping a property neat and tidy, landlords are responsible for providing a property fit for habitation and maintaining the property in a reasonable state of care. Tenants should notify their property manager in a reasonable time, and work together
to rectify any issues.

While tenants are responsible for the lawns and gardens, landlords must complete required repairs to appliances, pipes, plumbing and electrical, and any damage caused by natural disaster.
