Can social media kill your chances

By Tim McKibbin, REINSW CEO

Social media is now thoroughly ingrained in our lives. However, as we’ve learned over the last decade, there are downsides to sharing all your life online.

Jobseekers realised this first, when employers reviewed their social media accounts during the hiring process. Now landlords are tapping into the same resources.

Social media can reveal a lot that may not be included in your application. Ensuring your social media accurately represents your broader lifestyle and activities can support your rental application. This will then correctly present you to the landlord, who ultimately wants to ensure their investment is protected.

While privacy laws do exist to protect consumers, what you make public can be used to ascertain your suitability as a tenant.
