Before you sign a lease

By Tim McKibbin, REINSW CEO

After waiting in the heat with 30 other prospective renters to view the umpteenth property, it’s likely your ability to determine its suitability is diminished. You know what is a must and what is nice to have, but what else should you keep your eye out for before you apply?

A key feature should be safety. Are there locks on the windows and doors? If an apartment, how do you access common areas and are they secure? Insecure properties may mean you pay more for contents insurance.

Also, check that the appliances and fixtures work. Do the hotplates all turn on and does the fan in the bathroom work?

Finally, you should check there is ample storage or room to add storage units. Moving is stressful enough without finding you have no room for all your things.
