Ollie Gearing wins the 2022 REINSW Novice Auctioneers Competition

27 June 2022

A record seven finalists battled it out on Friday evening at this year’s REINSW Novice Auctioneers Competition (NAC) Final. The NAC is a platform for the State’s would-be and up-and-coming auctioneers to try their hand at auctioneering.  The event saw Ollie Gearing, from Advantage Property Group in Newcastle, take out the winner’s crown.

Gearing joined the real estate industry just one year ago, after spending several years working as a casual salesman at a car auction house. He always knew he wanted to get his break into real estate and was attracted to auctioneering after noticing that auctioneers appeared to be the most important person in the sales process. After travelling down to Sydney each Saturday for auctions as part of his job as a sales associate, he thought he'd give it a go.

"I wasn't really expecting to win so I was a bit shocked to be fair," says Gearing. "The Newcastle NAC heat was my first ever auction but I didn't win. So, I thought I'd go down to Wollongong and give it another crack, and won. I was happy it was over, but as soon as I got off the stage, I wanted to get up and do it again - I was hooked!"

This year for the third year in a row, the pressure was stepped up with the finalists given an actual property to auction off – this year it was a 5-bedroom rural property in Canoelands which sold for $1,076,500.

The NAC is a platform for the state’s would-be and up-and-coming auctioneers to try their hand at auctioneering. Each participant auctions a luxury item of their choice in the heats, with funds raised both during the heats and the final going directly to REINSW’s 2022 charity partner, Assistance Dogs Australia.

REINSW has committed to raising $25,000 for nationwide charity Assistance Dogs Australia, in 2022. The charity trains intelligent dogs to become carers and companions for people who are living with a disability. The funds raised at this year’s NAC – which exceeded $14,200 – will help Australians living with a disability to achieve their life goals.
