There are plenty of great reasons for joining a board and it can be such a rewarding experience, however there are also some risks to be aware of before you dive in.

There are many women out there who believe the rewards far outweigh those risks, and who will help give you the full picture so you can make informed choices about where to take your board career next.

We’ve gathered women on boards from across NSW who are ready and willing to sharing the risks and rewards of joining one. They can also give you tips on preparing your board resume, to pitching yourself and lobbying for your position.

    • Managing Director, Laing+Simmons
    • Only female Managing Director in real estate franchising in New South Wales and one of only a handful in Australia.
    • In 2019 she was awarded the top gong at REB’s inaugural Women in Real Estate Awards, was recognised by the Daily Telegraph in the top 100 most influential people in Sydney and awarded ‘Most influential Woman in the Property Market’ at the AREA Awards.
    • Addressing the gender imbalance, empowering women agents, and pushing towards industry-wide professionalism are among her key passions.

 

  • Has worked in Financial Services for more than 25 years and has been managing Risk and Compliance Teams for 15 years.
  • Worked in London, the US and Australia for Macquarie Bank, JPMorgan, ANZ, Suncorp and now BT.
  • As part of her roles at both Suncorp and BT, Emma has worked with, and provided risk advice to CEOs and Boards.
  • Volunteers for an organisation that works with at-risk teenage girls
 

Kathleen Conlon
 

Julia Garland McLellan
  • Professional non-executive director and thought leader in operational improvement and strategy and currently a member of several boards and advisory committees.
  • Was a partner for 7 years with The Boston Consulting Group. Held several Australian and US based leadership positions including Leader of Asia Pacific Operations practice, leader of the ANZ Healthcare practice, and Leader of the Sydney office.
  • Member of Chief Executive Women and awarded the Commonwealth Centenary Medal for services to business leadership in 2003.
  • Serves on boards and has real experience as a director as well as an advisor for boards in the NFP, Government and commercial sectors including ASX 200 listed companies.
  • Expert on boards, governance and how directors can build better companies.
  • Written and presented the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ highest-rated courses.
  • Published dozens of articles in top-tier academic and business journals and featured in mainstream media such as ABC News, Sky News, The Financial Review, the Financial Times.
 

Linda Rudd
 
  • Partner and National Head of Asset Management Services, Knight Frank Australia.
  • She oversees the delivery of commercial property and asset management services to institutional and private investors across office, industrial and retail properties nationally.
  • Experience in business planning to retain competitive advantage; driving operational efficiency; development of standards of service, policies and procedures; client relationship management; and, portfolio management and asset management consultancy.
