Webinar: How the New Strata Reforms Affect Proxies

Date: Thursday 6 July 2017
Time: 10am - 11am

In this free Member webinar, Carolynne Pitt and Leisha de Aboitiz will give you an understanding of the practice of proxy voting in relation to the new Strata Schemes Management Act 2015 and Strata Schemes Management Regulation 2016 which commenced on 30 November 2016.

This webinar will cover the following questions in further detail:

  • What does the Act say about proxy voting? The reforms seek to curb proxy farming by limiting the number of proxies a member can hold. Under the new strata regulations, proxy voting will prevent any individual attempting to control owners' decisions by obtaining a majority of proxy votes.
  • What do the new reforms really mean? The number of proxy votes able to be given to one person will be limited to: one proxy vote for schemes with less than 20 lots and 5% for schemes with more than 20 lots.
  • How do we work with it in practice? All owners of schemes who historically appointed a proxy who was a proxy farmer will need to reconsider their appointment of a proxy. The amendment should promote the engagement of more lot owners in the management of a Strata Scheme Building.
