Warning! ATO scam

13 February 2014

A highly authentic Australian Taxation Office scam is currently circulating. The scam prompts consumers to update their personal information for ATO records.

The fake email directs consumers straight to the ATO website and REINSW CEO Tim McKibbin said the email is extremely sophisticated.

“This particular scam was interesting because it linked directly to a credible source, which gave it a degree of authenticity," Mr McKibbin said.

“With this in mind, I personally called the ATO and asked if there would ever be a case where they ask for credit card details and they said absolutely no.

“When personal information is being, requested alarm bells should automatically ring despite how authentic the document should appear."
