Warning issued on circulating tax scam

31 January 2014
The NSW Fair Trading Minister Stuart Ayres has issued a warning regarding an ATO tax scam letter currently circulating in the industry.

Mr Ayres said the scam letter offers landlords living overseas the opportunity to a claim tax exemption on rental incomes.

“The scam email advises agencies of managing landlords to forward forms to them to complete and return to the scammer,” he said.

“The forms require detailed personal information as well as photocopies of passports and mortgage account numbers.”

REINSW CEO Tim McKibbin received the letter and advises consumers and agents to report incidences to the ATO immediately.

“We are aware of the scam letter and have received a number of phone calls to our Helpline regarding the issue.”
