REINSW congratulates Premier O'Farrell
29 March 2011
REINSW has congratulated the state’s new Premier on the Coalition’s historic win in Saturday’s election.
“Premier O’Farrell and his team deserve every congratulation on what is an overwhelming vote for change in NSW,” said REINSW President Wayne Stewart.
“The people of NSW have delivered the new Premier a mandate for reform across all areas of government, not least of which is housing.
“Saturday’s result is an overwhelming condemnation of the lack of action by the previous government on a range of issues, not least of which is the growing impact of the housing crisis on the people of NSW.
“NSW is in the grip of a housing affordability and supply crisis that is pushing the Australian dream of home ownership beyond the means of many.
“And the picture is no better for the state’s tenants with the rental crisis pushing up prices on the few available properties in the market place.
“The single biggest impact on the cost of living in NSW is the price of housing, be it to purchase or to rent.
“The state’s punitive property tax regime, combined with poor planning policies that have failed to ensure that additional land release keeps pace with demand, have directly resulted in lack of housing which has pushed up both prices and demand.
“There is now a real opportunity for the new Premier to hit the problem hard and fast by reforming property taxes and streamlining planning laws in order to stimulate housing development across the state.
“The public voted for solutions and the new Premier must now deliver the quick fixes needed to not only increase housing supply, for rent or purchase, but also improve its affordability,” said Mr Stewart.
