Building approvals slip

The total number of dwellings approved fell 4.7% in August 2010, following a rise in the previous month, according to Australian Bureau of Statics data.  

NSW approvals slumped 16.0%, Tasmania slipped 10.5% and Victoria fell 1.4%, compared to a 0.9% increase in Queensland, 11.2% jump in South Australia and 0.9% rise in WA.

Private sector houses approvals fell 4.3% nationally due to falls in New South Wales of 7.5%, Victoria down 7.7%, and Queensland down 7.0%, while South Australia lifted 3.6% and Western Australia rose 12.3%.

The value of total building approved fell 4.2% in August in seasonally adjusted terms. The value of total residential building fell by 7.8% while non-residential building rose by 3.1%.
