TOURISM REPORT HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR ACCOMMODATION DIVERSITY

Released 12 March 2008

The key finding of a recent report into domestic tourism that “all is not well” in the industry highlights the need for government at both State and Federal levels to support the diversity of accommodation that holiday rentals deliver, according to Real Estate Institute of New South Wales (REINSW).

The report, Through the looking glass: the future of domestic tourism in Australia, which was commissioned by Tourism Australia, found that cheaper international air-fares and the rising cost of local accommodation are among the factors influencing travellers to take their holidays abroad.

The report’s release comes at a time when some local councils in NSW are looking at restricting, or even banning, short term rentals, traditionally the choice of accommodation for generations of Australian holiday-makers.

“Any move to ban holiday rentals will only exacerbate the shortage of affordable accommodation identified in the report,” said REINSW President Steve Martin. “It means people will have fewer choices about where they stay and comes at a time when, as the report identifies, they want more, not less, variety.

“Some may even find the holiday place they have happily been able to rent in the past is now longer available to them due to changes in planning laws.

“The likely result is that some will simply decide it is easier to take a holiday somewhere like Bali. This has a ripple effect because local communities will suffer economically if holiday-makers stay away.”
