Rental vacancies up only slightly on the South Coast

Released 27 February 2009

Rental vacancies rose by just 0.1% on the state’s South Coast at the beginning of 2009 according to the latest data released by REINSW today.

The latest figures for January 2009 showed a 0.1% increase in the percentage of available rental properties, up to 2.6%

“Unfortunately there has only been a slight improvement in rental conditions on the South Coast,” said REINSW President Steve Martin.

“2.6% is the highest rate since October 2008 but only minimally above the 2.5% recorded in the December figures.

“The South Coast is now comparable to the following regional centres:

  • Albury – 2.7%
  • Riverina – 2.6%
  • Central West – 2.5%
“Despite interest rates being at historic lows, we have seen the South Coast fail to recover lost ground over the last six months falling form a high of 4.1% in September 2008.

“Hopefully we will see a return to greater rental availability over the coming months,” said Mr Martin.
