Rental vacancies up only slightly in the South East

Released 27 February 2009

Rental vacancies rose by just 0.1% on the state’s South Coast at the beginning of 2009 according to the latest data released by REINSW today.

The latest figures for January 2009 showed a 0.1% increase in the percentage of available rental properties, up to 2.4%.

“Whilst there has only been a slight improvement from December to January, the overall vacancy rate remains significantly higher than the low of 1.1% recorded in November 2008.

“2.4% is the highest rate since November 2008 and more than double that result.

“South Eastern NSW is now comparable to the following regional centres:

  • Northern Rivers - 2.3%
  • New England – 2.4%
  • Central West – 2.5%
“South Eastern has begun 2009 on a positive note and perhaps we are starting to see the beginning of the effects of a low interest rate environment.

“Hopefully we will continue to see even greater improvements in rental availability over the coming months,” said Mr Martin
