Rental vacancies start the year lower in the New England region
The latest figures for January 2009 show a rental vacancy rate of 2.4% which is down 0.2 percent compared to December 2008.
“Unfortunately there has been a deterioration in the rental picture in the New England District at the start of 2009,” said REINSW President Steve Martin.
“2.4% is the lowest vacancy rate we’ve seen in the New England District since November 2008.
“New England is now well below the highs of above 4% recorded in mid to late 2008 and is now comparable to the following regional centres:
- Albury – 2.7%
- Riverina – 2.6%
- Coffs Harbour – 2.5%
“Despite interest rates being at historic lows, we have seen the New England District lose virtually all gains made last year.
“This is despite an almost perfect property investment environment with low interest rates.
“Hopefully we will see a greater return to rental availability over the coming months,” said Mr Martin.
