Released 12 February 2009

REIA President Noel Dyett has called upon real estate agents around Australia to open their hearts and wallets to the plight of the victims of the Victorian bushfires. Mr Dyett is based in Bendigo, which experienced its worst fire damage in living memory.

"The heat and wind during the day was unprecedented and the speed and ferocity of bush fires so close to the centre of Victoria's third largest city stunned everyone," said Mr Dyett.

"The tragedy that was inflicted on Victorians in a number of areas of the state last Saturday will never be forgotten and many people will never recover from their ordeal," continued Mr Dyett.

"I am advised that Real Estate Institute of Victoria members lost their lives, but we are unsure of numbers.

"I call on all real estate agents and people employed in our profession around Australia to give generously to the Red Cross Bushfire Relief Appeal fundraising, which can be done through the Real Estate Institute of Victoria Charitable Foundation," concluded Mr Dyett.

Details of how people can donate are available on the REIV and REIA websites - visit www.reia.com.au/new for more information.
