GENErational shift at REINSW
Steve Martin, newly appointed President of REINSW, said there will be a focus on the needs of Generations X and Y.

The newly-elected President of the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales wants to see the Institute focus more closely on the interests and needs of Generations X and Y both as buyers and sellers of property and as participants in the real estate profession.

“We are very aware that the players in the real estate profession today come from these generations,” said Steve Martin, who was recently elected to a two year term as President at the REINSW’s State Conference.

“We need to listen to the ways they want to buy property; for example to what extent they feel more comfortable using the Internet than the papers to find out about for sale listings.”

Martin said that real estate is seen by young employees as a glamour job, but that newcomers can have unrealistic expectations about how quickly they can rise up the career ladder. “We’ve got to find realistic ways to realistically meet their aspirations and keep them in the industry once they’ve joined,” he said.

Martin is the first President of the REINSW to head a board that comprises 40 percent women and with a wider age range than in the past.

This is because over the past few months REINSW has been actively encouraging younger agents to get involved at board level and with the various chapters and regional divisions and the membership of the new board reflects this.

Plans have already been flagged by the board to set up a special chapter within the REINSW for younger agents. This would be loosely modelled loosely on the successful NSW Young Lawyers forum, part of the Law Society of NSW, which is actively involved in devising fresh ideas and directions.

A director of Colliers International Albury Wodonga, Martin has been a board member of REINSW since 2000 and was appointed Vice President in 2005.

As an agent who works in a regional area, but for a firm whose international affiliations require frequent travel to Sydney, Martin is in the useful position of having a good understanding of both the regional and metropolitan real estate markets in New South Wales.

Christian Payne of Payne Pacific in Cronulla is the new Deputy President of REINSW.
